Formatting Paragraphs • In a work written by hand always indent the first line of the paragraph. •In a work typewritten and double-spaced, always indent the first line of the paragraph •In a work typewritten and single- spaced, a new paragraph is set off from the previous one by double-spacing

  22. Paragraph Length A paragraph rarely has only one sentence. Usually it has three to eight sentences of varying lengths, all focused on one main idea.

  23. What is the topic sentence?The topic sentence is the first sentence in a paragraph. What does it do?It introduces the main idea of the paragraph. How do I write one?Summarize the main idea of your paragraph. Indicate to the reader what your paragraph will be about. Topic Sentence

  24. What are supporting sentences?They come after the topic sentence, making up the body of a paragraph. What do they do?They give details to develop and support the main idea of the paragraph. How do I write them?You should give supporting facts, details, and examples. Supporting Details

  25. Concluding Sentence ▪ it pulls together or summarizes the main idea of the paragraph, usually in a single sentence. ▪ it also provides a definite ending point for the paragraph.

  26. Types of Paragraphs 1. Narrative -used to tell a story or a sequence of events 2. Descriptive - used to describe a scene or an object 3. Expository - used to provide information, including facts, instructions, and definitions 4. Persuasive - used to share opinions and convince others to agree or take action

  27. Unity Paragraph unity means that a paragraph should be united as a whole. It means that the sentences inside the paragraph should directly support the topic sentence.

  28. Coherence Coherence means that every sentences in the paragraph sticks together and linking together in a continues line of thought ,that is establishing unity of idea.

  29. Emphasis The emphasis in a paragraph must relate to both the topic sentence in that section of writing, as well as the overall thesis statement if part of a larger essay or paper.
