  1. Do Now: Read “Passport to France” (pages 42-45) • In your notebook, answer: Would you rather pay higher taxes to fund social programs like universal health insurance, education, and unemployment pay or let individuals keep their paychecks and purchase whatever services they can afford? Why?

  2. “The Bald Soprano” is an example of theater of the absurd • Absurd, here, is a term pulled from Existentialism. It is used to describe man’s reaction to a world without meaning. • Albert Camus, “The Myth of Sisyphus” • Because life has no purpose or meaning, communication is unsuccessful. • Characters are stereotypes who speak in empty clichés; this prevents true communication/connection between people

  3. After reading, discuss: • What elements in the story were absurd? • What comment is Ionesco making about the way people typically communicate?

  4. Assignment Think of another ritual of everyday life that you find absurd (meaningless). Write a creative scene depicting this ritual in the style of theater of the absurd. This piece should be written in dramatic form (characters, lines, stage directions, etc.) Look at “The Bald Soprano” for ideas on how to incorporate cliché dialogue and other irrational elements (ex: the inconsistent ringing of the clock)
