  4. Educator Externship • Purpose of the externship: To provide a teacher or counselor a work-based experience in a construction or power and energy business that leads to the development of applied learning classroom lessons.

  5. Program Structure • Teachers requirements: • Fill out application (March-April) • Attend an Orientation (April) • Employer Interview (April-June) • Spend 40 hours at work (June-July) • Attend 2 day lesson plan Session (August) • Develop lesson plan (August) • Teach lesson (Aug-Nov) • Have students evaluate lesson (Aug-Nov) • Submit lesson and evaluations (Oct-Dec) • Attend show and tell event with students (Dec) Educators earn $2000 for their work

  6. Program Structure • Counselors go through the same process as the teachers except: • They work as a group • They focus on visiting post-secondary training and education sites. • Their deliverable is career guidance information

Results to date • 2010 • 22 teachers and 7 counselors • Estimated 990 students participated • 120 participants for the Show and Tell event • 2009 • 16 teachers and 5 counselors participated • 720 students participated • 80 Show and Tell participants • 2011 • 24 teachers and 7 counselors • Estimated 700 students participated • Estimated 200 participants for the Show and Tell event

Results: Counselors • 17 Education campuses and training centers visited • CBO’s a<3nd Adult Education • California Conservation Corps-Auburn • California Conservation Corps-Sacramento • Northern California Construction Training Center • Sacramento Job Corps • Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps • Twin Rivers Green Construction and HVAC programs • State Colleges • California State University: Construction Management and Engineering • Community Colleges • Cosumnes River College: Construction Technology and Green Building Program • Sacramento City College: HVAC and Thermal Solar Program • Sierra Community College: Construction and Photovoltaic Solar Program • American River College: STRIPE • Apprentice Programs • IBEW: Electricians • Laborers • Operating Engineers • PHCC: Plumbers • SMACNA: Sheet Metal and HVAC • WECA: Electricians
