  2. Objective • In this breakout session, you will be introduced to Grain Boy and Grain Girl, the energetic Whole Grain Heroes, who explain what whole grains are, the benefits of eating whole grains, how to identify whole grains foods, and how many servings of whole grains are recommended each day. • You will also be introduced to where the story came from and how Navajo County developed this lesson further to meet our program needs.

  3. Target Audience for these lessons • Whole Grains Heroes are used with our 4th Graders • It was developed further into a 3 part series • The lessons are each 60 minutes • The lessons help students learn about the benefits of whole grains & how they can incorporate whole grains into their daily food intake • The DVD is shown in the first lesson

  4. Ideas, Ideas, Ideas!!!!

  5. Where do they come from?

  6. Ideas, Ideas, Ideas!!!! • We get our ideas from meetings like this. • This idea came from a round table discussion that Coconino County gave several years ago. • Thank you Coconino County Health Dept!!!

  7. Where did the lesson come from? • Bell Institute of Health and Nutrition • This classroom activity for grades K-5, part of the Go With the Whole Grain for Kids curriculum, guides students through creating a bulletin board collage of whole grain foods, using magazine cutouts, product packages, or images printed from a computer.

  10. Go With The Whole Grain For Kids: Slide Program • This colorful 16 page slide program is a great way to introduce the topic of whole grains to your students. • There is a slide program for both younger & older students which can be read by the teacher or students. • If older students read the story it may take between 15-20 minutes.

  11. Script Included

  12. Why turn this into a DVD? • The whole grain lessons from General Mills Bell Institute has many things to offer & as we were looking at this we decided not to spend extra time reading the script. • We also did not like the idea of using the small pictures to show as we read the story. • And we like making movies. • So it was……..Lights! Camera! Action!

  13. How did we put this together? • Camera • Computer with movie making capabilities • Need 4-5 people to read the script • Provide a copy of the script to your readers • Print the 16 pages of the slides in color • Patience, we did several takes • Be creative

  14. Let’s watch the movie!

  15. ThankYou!!
