  2. Our Mission The mission of “The Big Event” is to serve every Northwest High School resident, regardless of need, and to say “Thank You!” for their support of the Texans. WE WANT TO GIVE BACK!!!

  3. So…What is the Big Event? Students and faculty serving alongside members of the community through a day of service projects to make a difference in the community and in the lives of people

  4. The Date APRIL 6TH, 2013 (yes, a Saturday. but…)

  5. Last Year • THE FIRST EVER BIG EVENT • April 28, 2012 • Over 600 student volunteers • Over 50 adult—faculty and parent—volunteers • 63 jobs completed • 5 communities SERVED

  6. What’s in it for me? • FOOD!! • Hanging out with really COOL people on a Saturday • Meeting people in the community • A chance to say THANK YOU to the community and make it better • Leaving a mark • Memories

  7. Who are we SERVING? • Anyone in the 5 communities who wants/needs our help • Organizations and parks • Highway cleanups • Businesses that serve the community • Schools • Fire Departments, Law Enforcement, and Libraries • Animal Rescue Facilities

Types of Jobs We will do all kinds of jobs, including: Painting Picking up trash Cleaning windows Landscaping …or just being in a person’s life for a few hours WE NEED HELP FINDING JOBS IN YOUR COMMUNITIES!!! If you know of anyone who needs our help, encourage them to sign up (or sign them up) on the BIG EVENT website today!!!

How do we find JOBS? • Advertising in the community • Flyers • People we helped last year • People like YOU spreading the word ANYONE in Haslet, Newark, Rhome, Aurora, or Justin can go to the Big Event website and register for us to help them. OR if you know of someone—you can add their name and we will contact them

Why do we do this? • To see teachers, counselors, and principals sweat • To meet new people • To work hard with our friends and make some really cool memories • To say THANKS to and improve our community • To be in people’s lives for just a few hours on a Saturday and allow them to feel the weight of our good. • To DO SOMETHING

Schedule for the Big Day 8:00 am Breakfast/Student Check-in 8:30 am Kick-off Celebration Begins 9:00 am Leaders Gather Tools for their job 9:15 am Load Buses and Leave for Job sites 9:45 am Begin Arriving at Job sites 1:00 Volunteers begin returning from jobsites 1:00-2:00 Cookout Lunch is served 2:00 pm Wrap-up Celebration in Texan Gym

Finishing a Job • Some jobs last longer than others—all jobs last 2-4 hours • When you finish your part of a work project, look for people who may need help finishing theirs • When your group is done, you will be picked up and taken to a zone command center… • …and when there are enough finished groups at the command center, we will begin returning to NHS to EAT!!!

REALLY Finishing the Job • When you finish your job—REMEMBER—this is a chance to meet someone in the community and show them what we’re all about!!! • Some people just want someone to take time out for them—so spend time talking to someone who may never get the chance to talk to a high schooler anymore. • People need us!!!

Two ways to sign up • Individuals can sign up, and will be grouped into teams of students with a REALLY cool adult sponsor, OR • Teams can sign up, either with an adult sponsor in mind, or can be assigned one from the many wonderful adults who are volunteering their time. IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW YOU SIGN UP, AS LONG AS YOU SIGN UP!!!

  16. How to Participate • Sign up as with a team or as an individual • Fill out the t-shirt order form/permission slip. If you return your form, signed and everything…YOU GET A T-SHIRT FOR ONLY $5 • Show up on April 6th—eat breakfast and get organized at 8:00 am • SERVE THE COMMUNITY • Come back to NHS and celebrate what you’ve accomplished TOGETHER

  17. Deadlines!! March 22—Sign up, turn in permission slip and t-shirt order form for a $5 t-shirt(after 3/22, t-shirts are $10) March 29—last day to sign up—HURRY!

  18. Adult Sponsors • All teams will have an adult sponsor. Some teams sign up with an adult sponsor in mind, those that don’t will be assigned one. • Sponsors may be Parents, Community Volunteers, or wonderful TEACHERS and COACHES • You will find out your adult sponsor ahead of time, and they will coordinate this craziness with you!

  19. Jobsite Safety • Wear plenty of sun screen • Drink plenty of water • Use work gloves where appropriate • Watch out for wildlife

  20. More Jobsite Safety • Always use the buddy system • Communicate with your adult sponsor—keep them within shouting range • ADULTS only on mowers, weedeaters, and chainsaws—any power tools • In case of EMERGENCY, all zone command centers will have first aid

  22. Important: Our Goal is 75 jobs IF YOU KNOW OF A JOB THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IN THE COMMUNITY, PLEASE HELP THEM SIGN UP ON THE BIG EVENT WEBSITE. IF YOU KNOW OF SOMEONE IN THE COMMUNITY THAT COULD USE OUR HELP, BRING MR. HAYS THEIR NAME ASAP!!! (there’s a prize in it for you!!!)

  23. What Now? • If you haven’t already, visit The Big Event website and signup—either with your group or as an individual • REMEMBER YOUR DEADLINES: March 22 for a $5 t-shirt, $10 AFTER 3/22 March 29th—LAST DAY TO SIGN UP • Find jobs in the community that may not know about us, but will need us on April 6th.

  24. The Most Important Thing The most important thing to remember is that this is our chance to SERVE, and serving can be fun when you do it as a team. This is your chance to make a difference in someone’s life, and we have a chance to affect dozens and dozens of lives—5 WHOLE COMMUNITIES—by working together. One Big Day—One BIG Difference…All N?
