Quick Review of aerobic respiration • If there is oxygen present, it is aerobic respiration • After glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm, the pyruvates made move into the mitochondria and travel to the Krebs cycle and then onto the electron transport chain • What is made? ENERGY!!! • 34 to 36 ATP molecules

  4. Think about a time when you worked out very hard… • How did you feel?

  5. No oxygen available, what happens? • If no oxygen is available, then the body must use anaerobic respiration to obtain energy. • Fermentation

  6. Fermentation • Not very efficient • Very few ATP molecules compared to aerobic respiration • Take place in the cytoplasm of the cell • 2 primary fermentation processes: • Lactic acid fermentation • Alcohol fermentation

  7. Lactic Acid Fermentation • No oxygen available • Occurs in muscle tissues during vigorous exercise • When muscle cells may be depleted of oxygen

Lactic Acid Fermentation • Pyruvic acid from glycolysis is broken down into lactic acid • When it is broken down, it releases energy • Glucose  pyruvic acid  lactic acid + energy • Replaces aerobic respiration so the cell can continue to have energy even when oxygen is not present • Only temporary • Cell still need oxygen for sustained activity • Lactic acid build up in tissues causes burning, painful sensation

  11. Alcohol fermentation • Occurs in yeast and some bacteria • Pyruvic acid from glycolysis is broken down to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide • Releases energy in the process • Glucose  pyruvate  alcohol + CO2+ ATP
