  5. Rosa Parkswas a seamstress. (Shesewed and made clothes). Martin Luther King, whowasonly 26 at the time, coordinated the boycott and gave itimmediatevisibility to the whole world. Fortyyearsaftergettingarrested, Rosa Parkswasawarded the PresidentialMedal of Freedom, the highestcivilianhonor, by President Clinton Rosa Parkswas 42 yearsoldwhenshewasarrested. Twomonthsbefore, Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old girl, had been arrested for the samereason. Rosa Parkswas a secretaryat the N.A.A.C.P.: whenshedecided not to give up herseat, sheknewthat black people werewellprepared and ready to support her. Rosa Parkswasreleased. The Federal Court declaredthat Alabama transportation segregationwasunconstitutionalseveralmonthslater. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (N.A.A.C.P.) wasfounded in 1909. On 1st December 1955, Rosa Parksdecided not to give up herseat to a white man on the bus Whenhesawthat Rosa Parkswasn’tgoing to give up herseat, the bus driver called for the police. On December 5 1955, the bus boycott started in Montgomery, Alabama. After 11 months of black people’srefusing to take buses, the bus companywas on the brink of bankruptcy.
