  1. Skeletal System After the test: Muscle Packet: complete “L” column by listing 3 more things that you learned. Skeletal Packet: complete columns “K” and “W” of your KWL chart (list 3 to 5 items for each column). Complete Activating Strategy and Read pp. 2 and 3 in skeletal system packet (mark text).

  2. Skeletal System LEQ: What is the purpose of the skeletal system?

  3. Skeletal System Lesson Activator: How are M&Ms like our bones?

  4. Skeletal System Preview Vocabulary: Long Bone Periosteum Epiphysis Medullary Cavity Diaphysis Compact Bone Articular Cartilage Nutrient Foramen Spongy Bone

  5. Skeletal System Integrated Literacy: Structure of Bone In order to better understand what our skeletal system does for us, we must look at the different parts of a bone. • With your seat partner, please read the information on pages 2 & 3 of your packet. • Go back and interact with text: underline the different parts of a bone and their purpose. • Based on the information you marked in the text, attempt to identify the parts of a bone on page 4.

  6. Skeletal System Structure of a bone: The structure of a bone can be looked at when viewing a long bone such as the femur. • A long boneis one that has greater length than width.

  7. Skeletal System • Proximal • Epiphysis Parts of a bone: • Epiphysis - distal and proximal ends of the bone • Proximal - closer to our head • Distal - closer to our feet • Diaphysis - the shaft of the bone • Purpose: filled with yellow bone marrow (fat cells) which are a source of energy. • Diaphysis • Distal • Epiphysis

  8. Skeletal System • Articular • Cartilage • Spongy • Bone • Articular Cartilage- smooth, white tissue that covers the ends of all the long bones. • Purpose: shock absorber and provides a gliding surface. • Spongy Bone (cancellous) - porous inner layer of bone; found at the ends of long bones, less dense than compact bone. • Purpose: filled with red bone marrow (red blood cell production occurs here).

  9. Skeletal System • Periosteum - connective tissue that surrounds the bone surface wherever it is not covered by articular cartilage. • Medullary cavity (marrow cavity) - space within the diaphysis that contains fatty yellow bone marrow. • Periosteum • Medullary • Cavity

  10. Skeletal System • Compact Bone- hard outer layer that gives bones their smooth white appearance. • Nutrient Foramen- natural path through the compact bone where nerves and blood vessels travel. • Compact Bone

  11. Skeletal System Structure of a long bone

  12. Skeletal System Summarizer: Parts of a bone worksheet • Review with a partner the parts of a bone (p. 4) • Independently, turn to page 5. Using the “Words to Know” for this lesson, label the parts of a long bone.

  13. Articular Cartilage Proximal Epiphysis • Spongy Bone • Compact Bone s • Periosteum • Medullary Cavity Diaphysiss • Nutrient Foramen Epiphysis Medullary Cavity Diaphysis Compact Bone Articular Cartilage Nutrient Foramen Spongy Bone Periosteum • Distal Epiphysis

  14. Skeletal System Structure of a Bone: • Bones are hard on the outside and have spongy tissue inside. • The spongy tissue produces blood cells for the circulatory system. • Bone tissue is alive and made of cells. It is always being destroyed and remade, especially while you are still growing.
