  2. Put Away • To set aside; to return something to its proper place • To put away指把用過的東西收起來, 放回原處或把東西收藏起來 • Ex. Put away the book you just read. (把你剛看過的書放回原位.) A. To put away 和 to put aside 意思略有不同. To put away 是把東西收起來, 放回原位. 但to put aside指的是把東西收在一邊, 未必是放回原處 B. To put aside 和 to put away亦均可表“儲存”.“存錢”.

  3. Put Down • To suppress • To put down 作“鎮壓”解,通常後面接riot(暴動), rebellion(叛亂)之類的名詞作受詞. • Ex. It took two hundred policemen to put down the riot. (這個暴動動用了兩百名員警才鎮壓下來.)

  4. Put Off • To postpone; to delay; to hold off • To put off其後常接until或till所引導的時間副詞片語. Off亦為介副詞,故若以代名詞作受詞時,應置於put與off之間. • Ex. The meeting was put off until next week. (會議延期到下星期.)

  5. Put On • To place (some clothes, shoes, a hat,…)on oneself. • To put on 指的是“穿.戴”的動作. • Ex. Why is John putting on his hat and coat? (約翰為什麼穿衣戴帽呢?) • 如果表示已經穿著的狀態(已經穿著了),則用動詞wear 或dress. • Ex. John is wearing a yellow suit. • John is dressed in a yellow suit.

  6. Put Out • To extinguish • To put out 專指熄滅燈火或火災而言. 其中put為及物動詞,out為介副詞,若以一般名詞作受詞,置於out前後皆可,但受詞若為代名詞,則應置於out之前. • Ex. You can put out your cigarette here. (你可以在這將香煙弄熄.)

  7. Put Up • To construct; to erect • To put up通常指建造房子而言,是固定的片語動詞, 其中up為介副詞,所以碰到代名詞當受詞時,要置於up之前. 受詞為一般名詞時,則多置於up之後. • Ex. We put up our tent near the stream. (我們在溪邊搭帳棚.)

  8. Put An End To Something • To cause something to end; to terminate something in a definite manner • To put an end to something指中止某一件事情,也就等於to bring something to an end. • Ex. You should help put an end to the quarrel. =You should help bring the quarrel to an end. (你應該幫忙停止那個爭吵.)

  9. Put One’s Foot Into It • To make a foolish remark; to commit a social blunder • To put one’s foot into it指在公共場合講話或舉止失當而處於窘境而言. • Ex. Tom put his foot into it when he criticized the teacher standing behind him. (當湯姆批評站他身後的老師時,他真的說錯話了.)
