  2. Mission Statement The New Arrival Center is committed to shelter English Language Learners in developing English according to ELPS and TELPAS Descriptors in order to be academically successful and active members of the school community.

  3. Vision Statement Every English Language Learner participating in the New Arrival Center will gain English proficiency and be prepared to achieve the state requirements to graduate from high school.

  4. New Arrival Center in Waller • The New Arrival Center (NAC) program in Waller located at Schultz Junior High will receive recent immigrants and ELLs coming from other school districts with a “Beginning” English proficiency level in their first or second US school year and do not show TELPAS progress.

  5. NAC Program Goals • Every ELL will progress at least one composite TELPAS level in English. • Every ELL will make a successful transition into regular content classes. • Every ELL will develop strong learning strategies to pass TAKS Tests. • Every ELL will attend school at least 90% of the school year. • Every ELL will be engaged in academic activities and dropout rate will be at or below state level.

  6. Teacher Expectations • Teachers use TELPAS descriptors to assess current linguistic ability. • Teachers use ELPS objectives as reference of Second Language Acquisition instruction. • Teachers use TEKS and TAKS objectives to be in compliance with TEA. • Teachers use DRA levels to measure every six weeks English reading skills. • Teachers incorporate phonic system lessons to increment reading fluency and comprehension. • Teachers encourage ELLs to read library books labeled with the appropriate lexile levels. • Teachers will assess Language proficiency twice a semester using the district Oral Language Proficiency Test (Woodcock-Muñoz). • Teachers will host NAC parents’ night once a semester.

  7. ELL Expectations • ELLs will learn 20 new words per week. • ELLs will be encouraged to increase their lexile levels in English monthly. • ELLs will be encouraged to attend tutorial classes. • ELLs will pass their LAT content assessments.

  8. Timeline Academic and Linguistic goals may be established by teachers using 6 weeks periods. • 1st 6 Weeks - - August 23 through September 30 • 2nd 6 Weeks - - October 4 through November 5 • 3rd 6 Weeks - - November 8 through December 17 • 4th 6 Weeks - - January 4 through February 11 • 5th 6 Weeks - - February 14 through April 8 • 6th 6 Weeks - -April 11 through June 1
