The Soviet Union also took Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia and entered Finland (Bulliet 780, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1939.html) Britain and later France engaged Germany in a “phony war” (Bulliet 780, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1939.html) Finland made peace with the Soviets in early 1940, then Germany took Norway, Denmark, and allowed Sweden to remain neutral but ‘pro-German’ (Bulliet 780, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1940.html) In ‘Operation Yellow’ Germany took Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and even France which was taken in June after being weakened by attacks from Mussolini’s forces (Bulliet 780, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1940.html) In early 1940 the Germans took the British controlled islands in the English Channel but when they tried to return and invade Britain in ‘Operation Sealion’ they were defeated over the Channel by the Royal Air Force in the Battle of Britain (Bulliet 780, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1940.html) Mussolini’s Italy entered the war in June of 1940 and aided in the German conquest of France and then took Ethiopia, Somalia, and then Albania. They were defeated in Greece until they gained assistance from Germany who took Greece in early 1941 (Bulliet 780, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1940.html, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1941.html) Germany pushed further into the Mediterranean first through Crete and then into Africa through Libya (Bulliet 780, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1941.html) In ‘Operation Barbarossa’ (June 1941) Germany attacked the Soviet Union they pushed east to the cities of Leningrad, Moscow, and Stalingrad but were defeated here by 1943 (Bulliet 780, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1941.html, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1942.html, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1943.html) Hitler declared war on the US in December of 1941 (Bulliet 780, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1941.html) In 1941 Britain and the Soviet Union allied themselves against the Germans (Bulliet 780, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1941.html) In 1942 the Allies launched ‘Operation Torch’ to invade German-controlled North Africa but this was put on hold after a defeat(Bulliet 780, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1942.html) In 1943 the Allies who now include the US begin to invade German-controlled Europe and begin to turn the tides of the war starting with ‘Operation Avalanche’ (Bulliet 780, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1943.html)

  3. War In Asia and the Pacific Battleships Facing Off at the Battle of Midway http://search.msn.com/images/results.aspx?q=battle+of+midway&form=QBIR#focal=d467f0fd85e55dd4b71768dc1d4ebf83&furl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sunwestmonograms.com%2Fwiseman%2Fcva7_yorktown.jpg The Capture of Iwo Jima http://search.msn.com/images/results.aspx?q=battle+of+midway&form=QBIR#focal=d467f0fd85e55dd4b71768dc1d4ebf83&furl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sunwestmonograms.com%2Fwiseman%2Fcva7_yorktown.jpg Germany, Italy, and Japan were known as the Axis (http://www.freewebs.com/worldwariiasia/19311941.htm) Japan took advantage of Europe’s instability to conquer Korea and Manchuria by the start of the war(Bulliet 782, http://www.freewebs.com/worldwariiasia/19311941.htm) By 1941 Japan had pushed as far south as French Indochina and Burma and had taken mush of eastern China (Bulliet 782, http://www.freewebs.com/worldwariiasia/19311941.htm) On December 7, 1941 in an attempt to gain recognition of their colonial gains by the US, Japan bombed the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor off the Hawaiian island of Oahu; this brought America into the war officially (Bulliet 782, http://www.freewebs.com/worldwariiasia/december71941.htm) Japan pushed into Singapore in 1942 and by May they had pushed east to New Guinea and were planning an invasion of Australia. When they cut supplies to Australia the US sent aircraft carriers to its defense (Bulliet 782, http://www.freewebs.com/worldwariiasia/thepeakofexpansion.htm) By June 1942 the Japanese conquests had reached a peak, Isoroku Yamamoto wanted to consolidate their conquests by gaining the upper hand in the Pacific so he devised a plan to take Midway Island from the US. The plan to take Midway was intercepted by US code breakers and the US was able to claim victory at the Battle of Midway(Bulliet 782, http://www.freewebs.com/worldwariiasia/thepeakofexpansion.htm) Loss at Midway put Japan into the defensive as the US commenced in retaking the Pacific Islands under the strategy of generals MacArthur and Nimitz of “leap-frogging”. The US retook the island of Guadalcanal in 1942, the Marshall Islands in 1943, and the Marianas and Guam in 1944. The Japanese resorted to using kamikaze suicide pilots to defend themselves; the use of thiss tactic in the Battle of Leyte Gulf only had 8% of the Kamikazes hitting their targets (Bulliet 782, http://www.freewebs.com/worldwariiasia/defensivetotheextreme.htm) “Not one Japanese soldier left alive” – Japan at the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa; their suidcide tactics and the US use of napalm equipped tanks lost the battles for Japan (Bulliet 782, http://www.freewebs.com/worldwariiasia/defensivetotheextreme.htm)

Within a week the Allies outnumbered the Germans in France and by late 1944 France had been retaken(Bulliet 782, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1944.html) In the Battle of the Bulge (Dec 1944) the Rhineland of eastern Belgium was retaken by the Allies By April 22, 1945 the Allies had surrounded Berlin (Bulliet 782, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1945.html) On April 30, 1945 Adolph Hitler committed suicide and the same day the Allies took the Reichstag in Berlin (Bulliet 782, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1945.html) On May 7, 1945 Germany surrendered(Bulliet 782, http://www.angelfire.com/ct/ww2europe/1945.html) Japan: The Japanese after Iwo Jima and Okinawa began to diversify their kamikaze technologies (Bulliet 783, http://www.freewebs.com/worldwariiasia/theatomicbombs.htm) Even after the fall of Germany Japan wouldn’t surrender(Bulliet 783, http://www.freewebs.com/worldwariiasia/theatomicbombs.htm) President Truman ordered nuclear attack on Japan: At 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945 the atomic bomb, nicknamed the “little boy” was dropped over Hiroshima. After three days of the Japanese refusing to surrender they dropped a second bomb on the port of Nagasaki. The Japanese surrendered(Bulliet 783, http://www.freewebs.com/worldwariiasia/theatomicbombs.htm)
