  6. Roman Renaissance

  7. Renaissance Basics • Renaissance- literally “rebirth,” a revival of the study of the art, architecture, literature, and learning in Europe, inspired by Classical Greece and Rome. • Humanism- cultural and intellectual movement concerned not just with God but with humans, focused on secular issues in addition to religious issues

  8. Features of Renaissance Humanism • Greater focus on secular issues • Admiration and idealization of Classical Greece and Rome • Study of the Humanities, subjects of grammar, rhetoric, poetry, and best of all, HISTORY • Appreciation of the potential of the individual person • Fascination with the human form

  9. Renaissance Misconceptions • Not a rejection of religion, not secularism • People were still very religious (check out the art!) • Not modern individualism • Still deep connection to community life • Not overnight • Revival of Europe took centuries, starting during the late Middle Ages (1000-1300) and continuing until the end of the 1500s • Not in isolation • The Muslim World had a big influence on theRenaissance, from trade to preserved knowledge • Not entirely Light • Religious and political violence continued • Not populated by Ninja Turtles
