The Greek Flag • The Greek flag contains nine parallel, horizontal stripes. • In a blue square on the top there is a white cross. • The nine stripes symbolize the nine letters of the word “ελευθερία” (elefthería=freedom). • Beside this, the stripes are nine as the syllables in the phrase “Freedom or Death” in Greek. • The cross symbolizes the religion of Greece, Christianity.

  6. The Greek language • The Greek language is an independent branch of the Indo-european group of languages. • It has been spoken and written without interruption for more than 2.800 years. Homer wrote his epic poetry in Greek as early as 800 BC. • It features theGreek alphabet, which was the base for the Latin and other alphabets.
