  2. What is the Field Book Project? • Initiated by the National Museum of Natural History and Smithsonian Institution Archives. • Mission: to create one online location for accessing biodiversity field books and other field research materials. Funded by

A Discovery-Based Project • Collections are distributed throughout multiple Smithsonian units; no central access point • Other museums with field books report similar situation • Field books from one source may be distributed across multiple institutions • Current access points: • Finding Aids • Inventory lists • Bibliographic library catalog records • Institutional memory • No community-adopted standard

Phase 1: Locally cataloged field books in the Smithsonian collections Museum of Natural History Smithsonian Institution Archives Field Book Registry California Academy of Sciences Field Books Other Museum’s Field Books Phase 2: Partner institutions and the larger community contribute field book records

  5. What is a field book? A textual record of collecting events conducted for biodiversity research. Field books may include supplemental information beyond what would be typically captured on a specimen label.

Progress and Milestones • Brought together collaborators • Chosen and refined four existing xml schemas • National Collections Description (NCD) • Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) • Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS) • Encoded Archival context (EAC) • Test phase cataloging

Goals • Catalog biodiversity field books at the Smithsonian • Improve the ability to track the location of field books at the Smithsonian • Create a public, online registry for accessing field books from anywhere with an internet connection • Have other institutions contribute records about their field books to the Registry

Life After the FBP—Future Goals • Digitally image field books and add them to the Registry • Conservation • Continue to engage users through social media tools. • IMLS grant: Connecting Content • Partner institutions: California Academy of Sciences, Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, Botany Libraries, Harvard University Herbaria, Ernst Mayr Library of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, Missouri Botanical Garden, The LuEsther T. Mertz Library, The New York Botanical Garden
