  2. I. President Grant • U.S. Grant is elected in 1868. • Grant will serve two terms(8 years till 1876) and was a very popular president. • However, Grant’s advisors were very corrupt.

  3. II. The Election of 1876 • Rutherford B. Hayes (R) • Samuel Tilden (D) • Democrat Tilden was expected to win! • The voting returns in three states were disputed.

  6. III. The Compromise of 1877 • Northern Republicans want the presidency. • Southern Democrates want the troops out of the South. • Hayes is given the presidency if he takes the troops out of the south.

  7. Who really loses from this compromise?? • FREEDMEN are left alone. • Southern whites takeover.
