  2. 508 Compliance • Section 508 defines accessibility issues that schools must address • Color: Design for color-blindness • Text and Pictures: Facilitate Screen reading for the sight impaired

  3. Further Compliance • Sound/Video: Needs text alternative for the hearing-impaired • Text placement:Best if viewable simultaneously with visuals and sound • E.g. Captioned video

Accessibility in PowerPoint • For PowerPoint’s native format (ppt/pptx) with or without LecShare: • To make it easy for screen readers to read your text: • For Text: Use preset layouts (not text boxes) • For Pictures: Add Alt text • For Tables: Add summary, headings • For Audio: Include script in PowerPoint’s Notes view

Adding Alt text to pictures • PowerPoint XP/2003-4 • After you add a picture • Right-click the pic(Mac: Control-click) • Choose Format Picture • Click the Web tab • Type in explanatory text • Click OK • Shows up when cursor hovers over picture • Screen readers read Alt text when they come to a picture

  6. Adding Alt text: PPT 2007 • After you add a picture • Right-click the pic(Mac: Control-click) • Click Size and Position • Then click the Alt Text tab • Enter Alt text • Click Close
