  1. Do Now for 9/24/13 Take out your write up and open your books to page A-26.HW: NoneSafety Review

  2. A7 Identifying Solids • Today’s Target: To accurately collect data about the properties of 4 unknown solids. • (safety review video) • Introduce A7 • Lab Safety • Gather data for the solids that were found in our mixture. • Clean up

  3. Today’s Target: To accurately collect data about the properties of 4 unknown solids. • What were the two liquids we identified from our unknown mixture? • Mineral oil • Iron Nitrate • Do we consider the unknown mixture to be hazardous? • Yes • Why? • Iron nitrate is toxic (poisonous)and corrosive (burns)

  4. Today’s Target: To accurately collect data about the properties of 4 unknown solids. Black squares/rectangles Large cylinders Red tubes Small cylinders

  5. Today’s Target: To accurately collect data about the properties of 4 unknown solids. • Use the tests on page A-29 to gather data about the 4 types of solids: • 4 Tests: • Conductivity – Ability to transmit electricity. • Light bulb illuminates = conducts electricity. • Density relative to water – Float or sink in water. • Floats = less dense, sinks = more dense. • Density relative to ethanol – Float or sink in ethanol. • Floats = less dense, sinks = more dense. • Reacts with copper chloride – Evidence of a chemical reaction. • Evidence of a reaction = color change, bubbling, cloudiness, temperature change, formation of a precipitate (solid forms in the presence of a chemical reaction)

  6. Today’s Target: To accurately collect data about the properties of 4 unknown solids. • Lab Safety and technique • Goggles and aprons. • Do NOT handle the solids with your hands – use the forceps. • Clean the solids with soap, water, and steel wool prior to testing. • Lab Progress (Red, Yellow, Green) • Red card = Just starting, lots to do. • Yellow card = Half way done. • Green card = Data gathered. Station cleaned up.

  7. Today’s Target: To accurately collect data about the properties of 4 unknown solids. • Clean up • Wash and dry each sample. • Wash your hands when complete. • Share your data with your partners. • NO ONE MAY REMOVE THEIR SAFETY EQUIPMENT UNTIL I HAVE CLEARED THEIR STATION.

  8. Today’s Target: To accurately collect data about the properties of 4 unknown solids. • Take out a 3x5 card and put your name, today’s date, and this period in the upper right hand corner. • Answer the following question: • If your lab group had: • a red card: What caused you to get so far behind, and what can you do to prevent it from happening again? • a yellow card: How many unknown solids do you have left to gather data on, and what was your most challenging part of gathering data? • a green card: What was your secret for successfully gathering all the data? • DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD!!!

  9. Do Now for 9/25/13 Take out A7 write upHW: Complete analysis 1 through 3Expanded answer for #1Classifying Matter Song

  10. A7 Identifying Solids • Today’s Target: To use evidence to properly identify the solids that were contained in our unknown mixture. • Lab Safety • Gather data for remaining solids • Clean up • Review data • Analysis 1 through 3

  11. A7 identifying Solids • Use the tests on page A-29 to gather data about the 4 types of solids: • 4 Tests: • Conductivity – Ability to transmit electricity.

  12. A7 Identifying Solids • Lab Safety and technique • Goggles and aprons. • Do NOT handle the solids with your hands – use the forceps. • Clean the solids with soap, water, and steel wool prior to testing. • Wash your hands when complete. • Share your data with your partners.

  13. A7 Identifying Solids • Analysis • #1 What is the: • Red tube – • Black Square – • Small Cylinder - • Large Cylinder - • #2 Were you able to identify what material each solid was made of? Explain

  14. A7 Identifying Solids • Data: Properties of separated solids

  15. A7 Identifying Solids • Data: Properties of separated solids

  16. A7 Identifying Solids • Analysis • #1 What is the: • Red tube – • Black Square – • Small Cylinder - • Large Cylinder - • #2 Were you able to identify what material each solid was made of? Explain

  17. A7 Identifying Solids • #3 Which tests identified physical properties? Chemical properties?

  18. Exit Ticket • Take out a 3x5 card and put your name, today’s date, and this period in the upper right hand corner. • Answer the following question on your card: • What Characteristic do you think was the best to use to identify the unknown solids? Why? • DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD!!!

  19. Do Now for 9/26/13 • Take out something to write with. • HW: A7 #1 is due tomorrow • A7# 5 is worth a test grade and is due Tuesday.

  20. A7 Identifying Solids • Today’s Target: To write a better analysis answer for A6#1 • Return work: Volume song • Go over A6#1 • Key Points and Vocabulary for A7 • A7 #1 Rubric • A7 #5 Rubric • #1 is due tomorrow • #5 is due Tuesday

  21. A7 Identifying Solids • Key Concepts: Write these down and give an example from the previous activities where this is shown. • Substances have characteristic properties such as density, that are independent of the amount of the sample. • Ex. • Scientists use appropriate tools and techniques to gather, analyze, and interpret data. • Ex. • Scientific explanations emphasize evidence. • Ex.

  22. A7 Identifying Solids • Vocabulary • Evidence-A1 • 1. Conductivity: A measure of the tendency of an object to support the flow of heat or electricity. • 2. Density: The relationship between the mass and volume of a substance. The mass per unit volume, specifically grams per cubic centimeter, or grams per milliliter. Density equals mass divided by volume (d = m/v). • 3. Reactive (reactivity): Substances capable of causing an explosion or providing heat or oxygen (oxidizers) that might cause a fire, or can emit toxic fumes when mixed • with other substances.

  23. Test for A6, A7 • Your task (#5 on page A-30): Write a letter to the state’s Hazmat Training Center explaining the safety procedures you followed while identifying the solids and liquids in activities A5, A6, and A7. • Your letter must include: • All the safety steps taken in the process. • Why each safety step was necessary. • Your letter will be graded based on: • The number and accuracy of the steps listed. • The clarity of the explanation of the reason for each step. • Technical aspects: • Spelling • Proper format • Neatness • Grammar • Etc. • PROJECT DUE ON Tuesday October 2nd.

  24. Exit Ticket • Take out a 3x5 card and put your name, today’s date, and this period in the upper right hand corner. • Answer the following question on your card: • How are you going to improve your answer for A6 #1? • DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD!!!
