  2. Who is your Jesus? • Yes, Jesus existed • Yes, Jesus was crucified • But, what did it mean?

  3. Luke 23:32-34 “forgive them” And two others also, who were criminals, were being led away to be put to death with Him. And when they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. But Jesus was saying “Father, forgive them: for they do not know what they are doing.”

  4. “Can any man be found who would prefer wasting away in pain dying limb by limb, or letting out his life drop by drop, rather than expiring once for all? Can any man be found willing to be fastened on the accursed tree, long sickly, already deformed, swelling with ugly weals on shoulders and chest, and drawing the breath of life amid long, drawn-out agony?” Seneca, Dialogue.   6. Mark 15:31-36 The chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him. At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour . . .

  7. Mark 15:31-36 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken Me?” . . . And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”--which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he's calling Elijah.” One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said. (Mark 15:31-36)

Why did He say, “My God, my God why have you forsaken me” • Prophetic • Context: “Prove you’re the Messiah by coming down off that cross” • Jesus: “I prove that I am the Messiah by being up on this cross” All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: “He trusts in the Lord; let the Lord rescue him” . . . I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth . . . A band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing. (Psalm 22:7-18) But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. – Isaiah 53:5,6 The life (of the animal) is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life. – Leviticus 17:11 John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” -- John 1:29

Why did He say, “My God, my God why have you forsaken me” • Prophetic • God’s Wrath But we do see Him who has been made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. -- Hebrews 2:9 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.“ An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. – Luke 22:42-44 THE CONSEQUENCE OF SIN: But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. – Isaiah 59:2

John 19:28-30 “It is finished” Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Tetelestai = Paid in full

  11. John 19:28-30 “It is finished” When you were dead in your sins . . . God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled out the certificate of debt . . . that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. Colossians 2:13,14 …and He Himself is the (satisfaction) for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. -- 1John 2:2

  12. John 19:28-30 “It is finished” • Temple veil was torn: And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Mark 15:37-38

  13. Luke 23:39-43 “You shall be with Me in Paradise” And one of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!” But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!” And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”
