Quotes 1.) “When he moaned and sobbed, it was the pain of living that was of the old and the pain of his wild fathers” (chapter 3, page 43) 2.) “He was beaten, he knew that, but he was not broken” (chapter 4, page 12.) 3.) “His muscles wasted away to knotty strings, and the flesh pads had disappeared so that each bone and rib had been shown” (chapter 5, page 81 and 82) 4.) “Love. Genuine, passionate, love, was theirs for the first time” (chapter 6, page 70)

  3. 1st Theme Idea: Loyalty to Each Other A. Buck saved John Thornton 1. From White River when drowning. 2. Thornton saved Buck from Hal. 3. Thornton fed Buck substantial amounts of food. "Here was neither peace, nor rest, nor a moment's safety. All was confusion and action, and every moment life and limb were in peril.”(chapter. 2)

  5. 2nd Theme Idea: Survival of The Fittest A. Obedient 1. Buck followed the orders of the man in the red sweater. 2. He did what John said by pulling his 1,000 pound sled. 3. He pulled Perrault and Francois’ sled. "For the pride of trace and trail was his, and sick unto death, he could not bear that another dog should do his work.“ (chapter 4)

  6. 2nd Theme IdeaSurvival of The Fittest B. Food 1. Perrault and François did not fed Buck enough. 2. The man in the red sweater fed Buck nothing. 3. John Thornton fed Buck as much as he was hungry for.

  7. Conclusion • This presentation describes the types of themes in the novel, Call of The Wild. The first theme was loyalty to each other and the second theme was survival of the fittest. • The themes are how Buck shows loyalty and how people show loyalty to him. Also how everyone adapts to survive in the harsh Alaskan Territory.
