  2. I. Appeasement • Accepting demands in order to avoid conflict! • When Hitler begins to move in Europe, the major powers (England, France) will appease him rather than fight.

  4. 1936: Hitler retakes the Rhineland in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. • 1938: Hitler takes Austria. • 1938: Hitler takes part of Czechoslovakia-Sudetenland • Nobody does anything!

  5. II. The Munich Pact • In 1938 at a conference in Munich, Germany, England agrees to allow Hitler to have part of Czechoslovakia if he promises to take no more.

  6. “Peace In our Time!” -Chamberlain • 1939: Hitler takes the rest!

  7. ` • On September 1st 1939 Hitler’sGerman armies invaded Poland. • Two days later England and France declared war on Germany. • WWII had begun!
