What is a Spray Tan and Should You Get One?

What is a Spray Tan?

Spray tanning is a form of artificial, sunless tanning available at beauty and tanning

salons. A spray tan consists of a fine mist that is evenly sprayed on to the body. The

spray contains Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which works with the skin’s chemistry to

create a tan appearance. The shade of the color depends on the individual’s unique skin

type. Typically, a spray tan will last an average of 5-10 days. Let’s talk about the pros

and cons of getting a spray tan.

Why You Should Get a Spray Tan

People often choose to get a spray tan because it is simple and it provides fast results.

Spray tanning is less time consuming than UV light tanning beds, a common

alternative, and far less time consuming than achieving a tan outdoors. Spray tanning

offers a convenient way to receive a tan quickly, with some companies even offering

this service in the client’s home.

While there are a variety of do-it-yourself tanning methods that can be applied at

home, these often result in stained clothing. The spray tan mist dries relatively quickly.

This mist is also non-toxic and noncarcinogenic for those concerned about the effects

of applying a chemical to their skin. The convenience, safety, and fast-acting results of

a spray tan make it a desirable choice for those seeking the perfect summer glow.

Spray Tan Risks

While the mist used in a spray tanning is perfectly safe, the FDA has not approved this

mist for internal use. In other words, the client must take safety precautions when

receiving their spray tan. This includes wearing protective gear such as ear plugs, lip

balm and nose plugs. It is also recommended that clients hold their breath, lips held

together, when the spray tan is being applied to the face. This protects clients from

inhaling the mist.

Additionally, those with sensitive skin may develop dermatitis after receiving a spray

tan. Your skin is sensitive for the first 24 hrs, increasing the risk of free-radical damage

to your skin. Clients are advised to to apply SPF while outdoors during this time frame.

So, Should You Get a Spray Tan?

There are many factors to consider before deciding to get a spray tan. Those looking to

achieve a perfect tan that is unique to their individual skin type can benefit from the

convenience and safety of the spray tan process, as well as receive the service from the

comfort of their own home. While those with sensitive skin will need to consider the

potential risks, the majority of clients are able to obtain the results they desire without

the time and hassle that alternative tanning methods require.
