  1. Skin Cancer Surgery --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Questions to Ask Before and After a Skin Cancer Surgery Apart from the actual procedure of a skin cancer surgery, the two most important stages are before and after the surgery. The before stage consists of questions to ask your prospective surgeon and the after stage will consist of the post-operative care to be taken. Questions to ask your surgeon before a skin cancer surgery 1.Were you specially trained in the field of plastic surgery? 2.Are you allowed to perform this surgery at hospitals? If so, which hospitals? 3.How many procedures of this type have you performed? 4.Am I a good candidate for this procedure? 5.Do you have ?before? and ?after? photos with you for each procedure and what results can I expect? 6.What will be expected of me to get the best results? 7.Where and how will you perform my procedure? 8.What are the risks and complications associated with my procedure? 9.How are complications handled? 10.What are my options if I am dissatisfied with the outcome of my skin cancer surgery? Post skin cancer removal The post-operative period is a crucial time for you to recuperate while following the instructions given by your surgeon. Apply topical medicines as directed after through cleansing

  2. Ensure that your incision sites are clean and well protected from potential injury Limit any movement that puts stress on your wound and your sutures And do not forget to ask your plastic surgeon, questions about what you can expect during your recovery period: What medication will I be given or prescribed after surgery? Will I have dressings/bandages after surgery? When will they be removed? Are stitches removed? When? When can I resume normal activity and exercise? When do I return for follow-up care? How long will it take before healing is complete? Healing will continue for many weeks or months as incision lines continue to improve. Typically, it takes at least a year before incision lines refine and fade to some degree. Sometimes, secondary procedures may be required to complete or refine your reconstruction. It is best to avoid exposing the healing wounds to the sun as this may result in irregular pigmentation and become raised, red or dark. In worse cases, exposure to the sun might increase the risk of the development of skin cancer in another region of your body. Reconstruction removes the skin cancer but no reconstruction is perfect. Although, every effort is made to restore your appearance as closely and naturally as possible, sometimes you may see textural, colour or other differences of the skin in reconstructed areas. Follow your doctor?s instructions and make sure that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, swelling, abrasion or motion during the healing period.
