  1. Difference between Indian President & American President

  2. Facts and Criticisms • The two countries are the world’s largest democracies, both committed to political freedom protected by representative government. • USA and India both were controlled and Ruled by the British.  USA got the Independence by Revolution. India got the independence after passing of the law in the UK. • In American democracy there is transparency, in India there is no such transparency. • American politicians see the welfare of USA and Indian politician see the welfare of political and rich class. • Indian Democracy is known as a family business and Political parties are political business houses or corporations, American Democracy is not run like family business. • In USA government works as Agent of the citizens but in India Indian citizens work as the agent of Government. Indian politicians order and Citizens obey it without opposing it.

  4. Differences in Powers and Functions of The President of India and USA

  5. I am only a figurehead. The real executive power is vested in the Prime Minister. I am the real head of the Executive of United States of America. • I appoint Prime Minister; leader of the majority party in LokSabha. I appoint other ministers BUT only with the advice of the Prime Minister I do so. And I appoint other ministers. But the fact is I have no choice in appointing the Ministers. • I nominate the members of the cabinet. Therefore they are called secretaries, not Ministers.

  6. I’m bound to follow the advice of the cabinet. • I’m not bound to follow the advice of the cabinet. I’m the Boss and Secretaries are my subordinates. • The Parliament makes the laws BUT my assent is necessary to make bill into law. If I do not like any bill, I may refuse to sign it, and send it for the reconsideration. After reconsideration, if the Bill is again pre-sented to me THEN I have no right to withhold my assent. • We apply doctrine of Separation of Powers strictly in America. I’m not a member of legislature. It is the duty of the Congress to make the laws. Not me.

  7. I do not have veto power. • I have veto power. • I can dissolve the LokSabha with the advice of the Cabinet. • I cannot dissolve Legislaturehere.

  8. My term of office is 5 years. • My term of office is 4years. • I’m given immunity by law. No criminal cases can be instituted against me. And civil proceedings can be instituted against me after giving a statutory notice under the article 80 of Civil Procedure Code. Therefore there is no immunity to civil proceedings EVEN for me! • I have NO immunity either civil or criminal proceedings. You can find some example cases like Water Gate case against Nixon, Monica’s case against Bill Clinton.

  9. I’m elected by indirect election by a special process known as “Electoral College”. • As a principle, I’m elected only direct election basis. But practically, I’m not elected by direct elections. • I represent Parliamentary Democracy. • I represent Presidential Democracy here in America.

  10. I’m not too strong not too weak. A balanced position is given to me. • I’m very strong. • I possess the equal characteristics of the King or Queen of Britain! • I combine in myself the functions of the King and the Prime Minister of England.

  11. If the No confidence vote is passed in the LokhShabha, the Council of Ministers should resign along with the Prime Minister. BUT I’m safe there! • If the Bill is defeated, neither I nor the Congress should resign. • There NO Spoils system in our country. Therefore I have no power to appoint Administrative services of my choice. There is a separate of “Union Public Service” to appoint the Administrative Officers. • I have spoils system in America. I can appoint 20% of the Administrative services of my own choice.

  12. I can be re-elected for many times. • I cannot function for more than two terms. • Good Bye!! • Good Bye!!

  13. …and Thank You!
