Practicing Listening Skills • Everyone find a partner. • We are going to practice effective listening skills in a real situation. • Share something that is important to you. • Each person will have 6 minutes to share and each will also listen for 6 minutes. • Practice using the verbal and non-verbal skills we discussed today. • We will tell you when to change roles.

  8. Applying Effective Listening • What did it feel like to be listened to? • What did you learn in this exercise? (Share with your partner). • Write down 1-2 things you want to begin doing differently as you listen to your family and friends.

  9. How am I …? Reflect on how you are doing in listening. Privately rate yourself from 1 (seldom) to 5 (often).

  10. Personal Action Steps • Identify one thing you need to stop doing that “kills” relationships. • Identify one or two things you want to start practicing to build relationships.
