  1. Pennsylvania Fuels for Schools & Beyond The Pennsylvania Fuels for Schools & Beyond Working Group supports and fosters a statewide biomass energy use initiative promoting local renewable natural resources to provide reliable energy for Pennsylvania schools and businesses.

  2. What is Biomass? • Biomass is any organic material that can be produced on a renewable basis, and be used as a feedstock for energy. “Working local biomass energy into our lives responsibly”

  3. “Working local biomass energy into our lives responsibly” Biomass Feedstock Sources Forest Non-sawtimber component of traditional sale Timber stand improvements Restoration activities on understocked sites Short rotation woody crops: poplar, willow, etc. Grasses Native warm-season grasses Cool season grasses Crops Corn, grains, soybeans Waste Urban and suburban wood/lawn residues Industrial: packaging, pallets, dunnage Pennsylvania’s Fuels for Schools & Beyond

  4. Why biomass for energy??? Current Fossil Fuels • Fossil fuels is used for meeting over 80% of the USA’s energy demand • Fuels are mostly supplied from outside the USA • Non-renewable • High input for extracting/recovering fuels • Large amounts of emissions (CO, CO2, SOx, NOx, etc.) • Cost (over $120/barrel of oil) Biomass as a Fuel • Renewable • Can and is produced within the US and locally • Local production = local infrastructure = local revenue • Low input for growing and recovering • Yield per acre • Fewer emissions than fossil fuels • Environmental benefit • Cost

  5. Why biomass for energy? Based on work done originally by USDA-FS. Expanded with values and prices from variety of sources (such as http://www.hearth.com/econtent/index.php/fuels/) http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/solar.renewables/page/trends/table10.html

  6. Pennsylvania’s Fuels for Schools & Beyond Mission Statement • Working local biomass energy into our lives responsibly. Organizational Goal: • Pennsylvania will lead the nation in establishing decentralized, sustainable biomass heat and power systems for economic and community development. Programmatic Goal: • Pennsylvania Fuels for Schools & Beyond Working Group will support the evaluation and implementation of biomass energy projects through education, technical guidance, and assistance with securing funding.

  7. Pennsylvania’s Fuels for Schools & Beyond Working Group • Provide overall guidance on the Fuels for Schools & Beyond Program • Working group is open to any that promote the use of local renewable natural resources as a source of biomass. Working Group Subcommittees • Education/Outreach • Development of program media including brochures, factsheets, and booklets on: resource, sustainability, economics, case studies, etc. • Technical • Provide technical guidance to end-users on pre-feasibility assessments, feedstock options, and availability • Financial • Identification of financing options- grants, loans, and dedicated funding

  9. Current Examples of Cost Savings with Biomass Heating • Mountain View School District- $131,000 • Current savings per year versus fuel oil • Dillon Floral Corporation (Greenhouse)- $191,000 • Savings per year versus #6 fuel oil • Elk Regional Health Facility (Hospital)- $300,000 • Anticipated savings versus natural gas • Benton Area School District- $72,800 • Anticipated savings versus fuel oil

  10. Considerations for a Biomass Heating System • Current fuel- usage/constraints • Site location- accessibility, roadways, fuel storage, etc. • Buildings- house the combustion system and components • Feedstock/Fuel- availability, access, supply, transportation, etc. • Cost • Local support/interest

  11. Components of a Biomass Heating System • Safety, Safety, Safety • Fuel Storage • Fuel handling system • Combustion unit • Combustion unit components/controls • Heat exchange • Exhaust • Emissions • Ash handling system
