SYNTHETIC FIBRES AND PLASTICS • Ms. ANUPAMA SINGH
Synthetic fibres or man-made fibres Artificial fibres developed using petroleumproducts and coal as raw materials
POLYMER • Many small units (chemicalsubstances) combined together to form a large single unit is called a polymer. • Example: Cotton or cellulose
MONOMER • The repeat unit (chemicalsubstance) of a polymer is called its monomer. • Example: glucose is a monomer of cotton.
Polymerisation • The process by which artificialfibres are made from simple molecules.
PETROCHEMICALS • Rawmaterials obtained from petroleum and used for preparing synthetic fibres. • Example: petrol, diesel, kerosene etc.
Rayon is also called as artificialsilk due to its properties which are similar to that of silk.
Rayon is known as a regeneratedfibre as it is made from a naturalfibre by man.
