Uranus History • Uranus was discovered by William Herschel on March 13,1781 by searching in the sky with his telescope and he was observing Uranus. • The name “Uranus“ was first proposed by Bode. The astronomical symbol for Uranus is a circle with a dot at its center, with a pointing off the top.

  3. Solar System • Uranus is more than 19 times farther than the sun. • It is number 7 in the planet order. • It has a mean distance from the sun of 2.87 billion kilometers. • It rotates about its axis once every 17 hours and 14 minutes.

  4. Moons • Uranus has 27 moons. • These are all of Uranus moons: Cordelia, Ophelia, Bianca, Cressida, Desdemona, Juliet, Portia, Rosalind, Mab, Belinda, Perdita, Puck, Cupid, Miranda, Francisco, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, Oberon, Caliban, Stephano, Trinculo, Sycorax, Margaret, Prospero, Setebos, and Ferdinand.

  5. Planet appearance • Uranus is a blue and greenish color due to the methane in its atmosphere. • It has a very light ring system that is hardly seen, with only nine rings clearly seen. • Uranus has a dark spot that has been spotted with the Hubble telescope, suggesting that the atmosphere is more like Neptune.

  6. Rings • The rings of Uranus were discovered on March 10,1977, by James L. Elliot, Edward W. Dunham, and Jessica Mink. • More than 200 years ago, in 1789, William Herschel also reported observing rings; some modern astronomers are skeptical that he could have actually seen them, as they are very dark and faint other are not.

  7. Exploration • The exploration of Uranus has to date been solely through telescopes and NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft, which made its closest approach to Uranus on January 24,1986.

  8. Interesting Facts • Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. • Its not visible to the naked eye, and became the first planet discovered with the use of a telescope. • Uranus is tipped over on its side with an axial tilt of 98 degrees. • It is often described as ‘ rolling around the Sun on its side.”
