  2. CA Standard 11.7.1 • Examine the origins of American involvement in the war, with an emphasis on the events that precipitated the attack on Pearl Harbor.

  3. Objective • Students will be able to recall various conditions that led to the Second World War, primarily with the rise of Fascism in the forms of Hitler, Tojo, and Stalin by creating a Facebook Profile Page

  5. The Rise of Hitler • After World War I, German economy is ruined • They have to pay for the war, lose territory, lower their military • Hyperinflation occurs (think wheelbarrows of money) • Treaty of Versailles punished Germany

  6. ADOLF HITLER • Adolf Hitler joins the NAZI party • Writes in Mein Kampf (My Struggle) Germans part of a superior Aryan race, and blames Jews for Germany’s problems • Able to become Fuhrer (leader) in 1934 • Fascism born: glorification of nation above the individual, a dictatorship with severe economic and social control, and the use of force against opposition

  7. Anti-Semitism • Discrimination against Jews • Jews not allowed to work in government jobs, education, practice law, or medicine • Nuremberg laws took away Jews’ German citizenship and banned marriage between Jews and non-Jews • Many Jews forced to move to other parts of the world

The Rise of Mussolini • WWI also brought economic/political problems to Italy • Italian nationalists upset with Treaty of Versailles (did not give them enough territory) • Mussoloni part of Fascist party • Led a “March on Rome” to defend capital against communist takeover, and became prime minister of country • Under his rule, elections were controlled, opposition was outlawed, and the press was censored • Mussolini pursued aggressive imperialistic means, including the invasion of Ethiopia

  9. Hideki Tojo • Prime Minister of Japan • Japan pursued an increased usage of militarism and imperialism • Attacked Manchuria 1931 • Military took control over Japan in 1932 • Signed alliance with Italy and Germany 1936 (creating the AXIS Powers) • Prepared for continued aggression in Asia
