Types of Government of Ancient Greece Class Work: Warm Up: Review reading sheets from Greek Geography and Rise of City States. Check answers in pairs. Reading was last class (p. 80) Warm-Up/Check-HW-5 Question Stems. (WIO p. 79) Check Answers on Greek Geo and City-States Reading (p. 80) History Alive Simulation- “The Rise of Democracy” and types of Government Mini-Assessment on Greek Government • WIO: Paragraph about Government today • Circles: Write a 5-7 sentence paragraph explaining which types of government you would prefer to live under and explain why using evidence from your notes. • Squares/Triangles: Write a 5-7 sentence paragraph describing how our government (democracy) has been influenced by the governments of Ancient Greece. Types of Government Simulation Activity When I say GO, *Push all the desks to the back or sides of the room *Have your notebook, Notes Sheet, and writing utensil *Sit on the floor-When you sit on the floor, you have NO POWER as citizens of this Civilization As we learn about the 4 types of government in Ancient Greece, we will choose music to listen to based on the ways decisions were made in each government structure.

Monarchy Definition: Directions: • The earliest form of government in ancient Greece was monarchy, in which one person-such as a king or emperor-had the power to make all of the political decisions. • Those of you sitting on the floor have no power. • Yellow=king • Green=prince • King chooses a song and the volume • The king has passed away. • Prince-it is now your responsibility to choose a song Black Eyed Peas- I Gotta Feeling Jimmy Buffet- Cheeseburger in Paradise Don’t Stop Believing - Journey

Monarchy • ruled by a king, no queen • kings had all power • at first chosen by people • later inherited power passed on to sons • kings served as judges, religious leader, led armies • aristocrat counsels • aristocrats: best, most wealthy, land owners • kings were dependent on aristocrats • aristocrats realized that they, as a group, were stronger that the king • eventually aristocrats took power leading oligarchy • Monarchies Today

Reflection on Monarchy: *How did you feel during this part of the activity? *Did you like the choices made by the king and the prince? *If you wanted different music from what the king and prince chose, was there any way you could have had it played? *Who makes the decisions in a monarchy? *What are the advantages of a monarchy? What are the disadvantages?

  6. Oligarchy Definition: Directions: • Oligarchy developed in Greece as an alternative to monarchy. In an oligarchy, a few individuals have the power to make political decisions. • Remember: those of you on the floor have no power. • Oligarchs were the wealthy members of society. Oligarchy • ruled by small group of wealthy landowners • oligarch=Greek word a few • very comfortable lives while poor worked in fields • the hardworking poor saw difference between the lives of the rich and poor • oligarchy abused power • ignored the needs of the poor and used army to make them obey • rich got richer and the poor got poorer • eventually the poor found leaders who promised to improve their lives • backed by the people, the leader took power

Why do you think you were given money? • How did you feel when you couldn’t hear the music? • Who makes decisions in an oligarchy? Who do you think made the decisions in the oligarchies of Greece? • What are the advantages and disadvantages of an oligarchy?

Tyranny Definition: Directions: • Discontent with the oligarchy in ancient Greece led to the rise of new leaders, called tyrants. • In a tyranny, one individual seizes power by force and rules single-handedly. • Remember: those of you on the floor have no power. • Which of you believe that the class would like YOU to be the one to select the music? • Stick=symbol of military background • Tyrant: follow the advice of your supporters to choose the next song Lady Gaga- Poker Face Taylor Swift- Love Story OAR- This Town

  10. Tyranny • one person takes power by force/not a lawful king=tyrant • no legal right to rule/ son does not inherit • mostly military leaders who got support from the poor and unhappy people • tyrants rule became unbearable people of Athens forced them from power

  12. Democracy Definition: Directions: • Around 500 B.C.E., after the overthrow of the harsh tyrant, the citizens of Athens decided they would rule themselves. This was the beginning of democracy. • In a democracy, people vote to make political decisions. • Class vote • We will play the song that receive more than half of the votes. This is the majority. Democracy • people tried governing themselves • democracy=rule by people • Direct Democracy= every citizen votes on every issue/Athens • Representative Democracy=people vote for reps who vote in their name/United States • assembly=law making group made up of free men • not all believed it was a good type of government • Democracy was one of the greatest gifts to the modern world from Ancient Greece
