  • Communication when the message is sent without or in addition to words
  • May reinforce, contradict, regulate or substitute for verbal symbols.
  • Nonverbal communication can differ among cultures
    • Examples: Shaking hands is not expectable in some cultures. Direct eye contact is also not expectable in some business practices.

  • The appearance and correctness of a written document can send critical nonverbal messages.
  • Importance aspects of your image are conveyed by nonverbal symbols.
    • Examples: If you come to a meeting wrinkled and mismatched, you will not “look” as professional as you would if you wore clean, and neat professional attire.

  • Characteristics of a physical setting, such as furnishings and color, can send nonverbal messages.

    • Physical Barriers: Deafness (Verbal Communications), Blindness (non-verbal communications)
    • Outside Barriers: Sirens, Others talking during presentations, cell phones

  • Various types of teams are common in the workplace. (Peer teams and teams made up of different levels of employees)
  • Communicating effectively is key to success when working in with a team
  • Individuals should strive to be good team members and to participate in order to complete the task at hand!
