  2. Active Transport Recall… There are 2 ways to move molecules into and out of the cell. Passive Transport-DOES NOT require ENERGY from the cell. Molecules move from areas of high concentration to low concentration by random kinetic motion. Active Transport-REQUIRES ENERGY to be used by the cell. Molecules are moved from areas of low concentration to high concentration with the use of PROTEINS

Active Transport • Like facilitated diffusion, it uses PROTEINS, called pumps. • The proteins will change shape like those in facilitated diffusion also do. • The cell must use energy (ATP) to move the molecules. • Can move small molecules and ions against the concentration gradient • Like Na+, K+, and Ca2+ • One example is a Sodium-Potassium Pump
