  3. What is Effective Communication? • The process of sharing information, thoughts, and feelings between people through speaking, writing or body language

  4. The Importance of Communication • Communication is an essential skill to have both in one’s personal and professional life. • Communication helps prevent unwanted stress and builds trust with those you work with.

  5. How to Communicate • Key Clubbers • Keep it casual • Safekey! • Advisors, Organizations, Kiwanians • BEE Professional • Use Mr., Mrs., or Miss • Outside Organizations: Include information about Key Club • Parents • remain respectful!

  6. Key Clubbers • Social Media • SafeKey • You are representing Key Club! • Official business should not be conducted • Promotion of events: Who? What? When? Where? Why? • Phone Calls • 8AM - 8PM • When should I use text messages?

  7. Maintaining Professionalism DOs: • Use correct grammar and spelling • Use proper titles • Communicate between the hours of 8AM and 8PM • Wear appropriate attire DON’Ts: • Use slang • Contact at odd hours • Be close minded • Forget to follow up in a timely manner

  9. How to Communicate with Parents • Be RESPECTFUL! • Remember you represent Key Club! • Stay calm • Look at it from the parent’s point of view • Don’t talk back • If things get out of control take it to the adults (Club & Kiwanis Advisor)

  10. Sharing Knowledge Knowledge is POWER Equip yourself and your team with as much knowledge as you can!!! • Show your team how all the pieces of the pictures fit together • Demonstrate how the team makes a difference to the members • Train others

  11. Building Trust The core of communication is developing trust. • Establish acceptable standards of behavior to eliminate confusion • Live up to your commitments • Respect confidentiality

  12. Providing Feedback People need to know where they stand. • Let team members know what is required of them • Tell them how they’re doing as a team • Be honest, but also respectful

  13. Lead by Example We have to walk our talk personally and professionally • People watch everything you do • You are always leading • Everything counts

  14. What happens when communication goes wrong? • Let’s say someone criticizes you for not communicating effectively… • Be the bigger person • Talk it out to rebuild trust • Don’t just leave the situation alone! • Do something about it!
