Different states CLOSED Psychological blindness keeps person from seeing alternatives, either in the past or future, with only one way to think, be or do ARRESTED Understanding of higher levels of thinking is blocked by barriers. 21. Motivating people… • Successful coaches are in danger of failing if they continue to manage people in the ways that made them successful in the first place • The question is not ‘how do you motivate people?’, but rather…how does what you are doing impact upon their natural motivational flows?

  22. Some important points to consider • Human psychology is an emergent process from older behavioral systems to newer higher order systems • People change systems when their life conditions change • Each level has its unique learning, thinking and motivational styles • Each level has positive and negative manifestations • People do not all progress at the same speed, and all are not able to move to higher levels • Intelligence (IQ), gender, race and age DO NOT correlate with levels of thinking • No system is better or worse than another – appropriateness to life conditions is the key • Higher is not happier – but does have more complexity of thinking and thus more degrees of freedom to act • Coaching must be consistent to the players level and should • facilitate healthy (positive) growth in the current level, and • facilitate movement to higher levels of thinking/ being • This is not about types of people, but rather systems of thinking
