  • “To coach” comes from the root meaning “to bring a person from where they are to where they want to be”

  • Not only are the lower performers not doing their jobs, they’re probably preventing the top performers from doing their jobs as well

  • The universal need of all team members is consistency

  • One of the leader’s priorities should be to eliminate inconsistencies & contradictions within the team

  • Your super stars earned their way into that category by being consistently outstanding performer

  • Your job is to raise the bottom, not lower the top

  • Many top performers go to bed hungry at night- hungry for recognition from you

  • Get them involved

  • Delegate extensively

  • Encourage them to teach

  • Provide training

  • Have then fill in for you

  • Stretch them

  • Celebrate their successes

  • Frequently tell them how proud you are of them

  • Spend time with them

  • Promote them

    Your job is to create a climate in which people can excel & move into areas of greater responsibility within the organization

  • The middle stars are the backbone of your team & usually represent the highest percentage of team members. They are volatile but important people who could eventually become super stars…or falling stars

  • Improving results from the middle stars may mean the difference between your success & failure

Build their confidence by increasing their responsibilities

Give frequent & accurate performance feedback

Create a resource library

Teach them how to set goals

“Catch” them doing good things

Hook them up with a super star for mentoring

Create rewards that appeal to their personal values

Often it’s the “small things” you do that will inspire middle stars to become super stars

  • Are my expectations reasonable and obtainable?

  • Have they received adequate training to do the job?

  • Am I holding them accountable for their performance? Are there

    appropriate & consistent consequences for non-performance?

  • Do I consistently recognize & rewards positive performance?

  • Have I given them the freedom to be successful?

  • Have performance obstacles been removed?

  • Roll up your sleeves…This is the tough part of the job

  • Have you established positive work climate? (See Climate Check Questions)

  • Coaching the falling stars, help them improve, or replace them with more productive people

  • Falling stars can have a detrimental impact on your entire team

  • A good coach helps people get to where they need to be. Ultimately, it’s each persons responsibility to decide to be a super star, a middle star, or a falling star. Truth is, you can influences that decision but you can’t control it
