  2. The Founder • James Naismith invented basketball in 1891. • He was an athletic director at a local YMCA in Springfield, MA. • The first game was played with a soccer ball and 2 peach baskets used as goals.

  3. The Components

  4. Dribbling • It’s important when dribbling a ball to have your knees bent. • Keep your hand over the ball at all times with your palm facing the floor. Continue to bounce the ball continuously. • Always keep your eyes up to view the whole floor at all times.

  5. Shooting • Always have your body aligned squarely with the basket. • Have your palm under the ball with the middle finger in the middle of the ball. • Your weak side hand will be on the side of the basketball to help guide the ball to the rim. • Have elbow in tight, aligned directly with the basket. • Follow through shooting the ball toward the goal where wrist and hand will be flexed in the air • Instruction available at www.shotperfect.com

  6. Proper Technique

  7. Passing • See who you are passing to. • Always step toward the person receiving the pass. • Ball should be positioned at the chest. • Release the ball. • Palms should be facing outward after the pass

  8. Defense • Object is to stay in front of opponent and prevent them from scoring, without fouling. • Have knees bent, butt down, chest out, arms out to the sides, and eyes following your opponent. • When opponent moves slide your body without crossing your legs to stay in front of them. • Prevent your opponent from scoring.

  9. Defense Wins Championships • When opponents points per game are limited to under 95 ppg. teams have higher winning percentages. • Based on the NBA.
