  1. AFRICAN WOMEN’S DEVELOPMENT FUND (AWDF) Euro NGOs 2010 Conference 9 November, 2010, London Presented by Joan Koomson Programme Officer – Donor Liaison

  2. About AWDF AWDF is a grant making foundation which aims to support the work of the African women’s movement. It was established in 2000 by 3 African women who wanted to be part of the process of building an autonomous resource base for African women.

  3. Vision • ForAfrican women to live in a world where there is social justice, equality and peace • Mission • To mobilise human, material and financial resources to support initiatives led by African women • Between 2001 and now AWDF has supported over 800 women’s organisations spread across 42 countries in Africa with over 15 million US Dollars in grants.

  4. AWDF Programme Areas; • 6 Thematic Areas – Women’s Human Rights - Economic Empowerment - Health and Reproductive Rights - Peace Building - Political Participation - HIV and AIDS • Capacity Building - Skills Building - Thematic Convening's - Grant Making

  5. Movement Building – The African Feminist Forum, Legacy Fund, Solidarity fund • Education and Outreach – Advocacy, Partnerships and Donor Education

  6. AWDF is currently reviewing its work over the last 10 years and re-defining our strategy for the coming years • This includes the development of a new 5 year strategic plan • Realignment of our Programme areas – to take on board new emerging issues affecting women on the continent e.g. climate change and food security, access to, and ownership of land by women on the continent, access to family planning and reproductive health services and commodities, etc • Developing New Strategic Relationships with Multilateral and Bilateral agencies for Funding opportunities

  7. Engaging more effectively with key agencies such as the AU, UN etc on issues affecting women on the continent • Explore other opportunities of increasing our funding base – Social Enterprising, Legacies, Individual donors, endowments • Continue to provide the critical funding that is needed to advance the social, economic and political empowerment of women on the African continent

  8. Challenges • Insufficient financial and human resources to meet the growing demand for our services. • Cost of doing business on the African continent – communications, infrastructure, transport etc. • Unwillingness of most donors to support core/operational costs
