  2. What is Service-Learning? • A form of experiential learning that employs service as its modus operandi. • A method under which students learn and develop • A method through which citizenship, academic subjects, skills, and values are taught

  3. What are the benefits of Service-Learning? • Increase retention • Provides quality education • Increases the relevancy of education to students “living in a real world” • Enhances personalized education for students • Teaches positive values, leadership, and personal responsibility

  4. Benefits continued • Empowers students as learners, teachers, achievers, and leaders • Teaches job skills and prepares students for careers after college • Contributes thousands of hours of service to people in need, non-profit agencies, private sector companies, non-governmental and governmental agencies

  5. Two of my Many Community Services • ‘Dosta Dash: Junior Service League volunteer opportunity • The league works for the betterment of their community • I was in charge of making sure the traffic did not interfere with the race • I was to also make sure the runners stayed on the correct course

  7. My Second Community Service • Valdosta State University Visitation Day: gives prospective students a chance to check out the university’s campus

  8. Visitation Day • I had two jobs to do: inform the prospective students about the Honors Program offered at VSU and be a tour guide to a group of about fifteen students and parents • I had to answer questions that the incoming students may have or the concerns of the parents

  10. My Reflection on Service-Learning • I love taking part in service-learning • I have gained leadership skills and much confidence • It was really fun and I gained many new friends along the way • I have obtained many beneficial talents that will help me out later in life

  11. My Reflection Continued • I will continue to do service-learning projects • It feels good to be able to give back to your community!
