Benefits of the Academies • Preparation for college AND high-demand, high-wage careers • Parent and community involvement • Personalized learning environment for ALL students in a cohort structure • Engaging curriculum and instruction • Practical work experiences such as job shadowing and internships • Opportunities for online courses, college credit, and professional certifications during high school • Project-based, interdisciplinary learning

  8. Academy Coursework and College Expectations • A BIG benefit to being in one of the Academies is how colleges view your course work and the number of AP courses taken over you four years in high school. • What are they looking for? • UGA- • Georgia Tech • Other?

A Competitive College Comparison UGA’s Freshman Profile Georgia Tech’s Freshman Profile Core GPA = 4.0 avg SAT mid 50% = 2050-2240 ACT mid 50% = 30-33 Total AP/IB/DE = 6-11 94% have taken at least AP Calculus or equivalent Admit rate dropped from 55% in 2012 to 33% in 2014 • Core GPA mid 50% = 3.8-4.09 (Academic only) • SAT mid 50% = 1800-2060 • ACT mid 50%= 28-32 • Total AP/IB courses = 4-8 • Honors Program mid-50%: • 4.0-4.18 GPA • 2130-2240 SAT • 32-34 ACT

  10. 2 Requirements & Expectations Academies @ Pope offers career academies for students of exceptional merit.

  11. Expectations Each Career Academy will have its own expectations and course requirements. Students accepted to the Academies @ Pope are first and foremost expected to maintain specific grades in each Academy course. In addition to maintaining academic excellence in the classroom, students are also expected to complete the following: • Yearly participation in extracurricularacademyactivities such as Science Fair, Science Olympiad, Robotics, Math Team, FBLA, Mock Trial, Debate, Model UN, STEM events, Prostart Culinary competitions and Academic Bowl. • Complete a capstone project/digital portfolio and/or business internship during junior or senior year. • Attend Academy specific activities such as summer workshops, business presentations and other events mandated during Academy courses.

  12. Students havestrong interest in mathematics, science and technology. This academy has the highest math requirement . STEM- Advanced Math & Science Pathway

  13. STEM- Engineering Pathway Minimum math requirement for entry to the engineering academy is AccCoordAlg/ Geom A **

  15. Math Requirements for the STEM Academies Advanced Math & Science Academy- • Must enter 9th grade at AccGeom B/Adv Algebra (CAG in middle school). • If student was in Algebra in middle school they will be required to complete Geometry A online in the summer with Cobb Virtual Academy.

  16. Math Requirements cont. Engineering Academy- • May enter 9th grade at Acc Algebra/Geom A or AccGeom B/ Advanced Algebra • Can be in Coordinate Algebra in middle school (and then some algebra review will occur in high school) or AC Math 8. You are starting at the beginning of the accelerated math program.

  17. Culinary Academy- Students should have a strong interest in hospitality and tourism related fields.

  18. Culinary Arts Academy Career-oriented instruction in both classic and modern culinary arts with an emphasis on the skills needed to succeed in the industry and postsecondary education. Students who successfully complete the Culinary Arts Pathway and pass the end-of-pathway and ServSafe tests are allowed to exempt the initial Culinary Arts course in Kennesaw State University’s new Bachelor of Science in Culinary Sustainability and Hospitality Management. Participate in Culinary Arts activities and competitions Catering to many Pope groups throughout the year

  19. GLOBALIZATION ACDEMY Participate in Model UN, Debate, Academic Team etc. Globalization Academy students will take World Language for all four years. This can be either the study of one language through AP level, or a combination of two languages. Globalization Academy Globalization Academy students will have the opportunity for study /travel at least once during their high school career.

Applications Online • Academy Application- online on Pope website • under the Academic tab- • Items which will determine acceptance to the academies include the following: • Application • Academic Transcript/Test Scores • Extracurricular Activities • Essay Questions • Teacher Recommendations • All forms must be completed and emailed to Loretta.clune@cobbk12.org • by December 5, 2014. No exceptions!
