Wonder and Discovery • What if you had the chance to visit a wetlands area nearby? • What wetlands creature would you want to watch and learn more about? • Do you have any experience with wetlands and the inhabitants? • Why are wetlands important? • What are some things that harm wetlands and the inhabitants?

Project Description • WETLANDS: FILTERS, SPONGES, & MAGNETS FOR BIODIVERSITY • Observe the wetlands ecosystem and wildlife on the Coyote Hills fieldtrip. • Choose a wetlands creature you would like to research and learn about. • Brainstorm with the class on why wetlands are important. • Brainstorm independently on questions you have about your creature. (Be sure to include the creature’s common and scientific name, diet, habits, enemies, young, and physical characteristics). • Find some pictures, fun facts and information about your creature (online, books, magazines, park ranger interviews, etc.), and create a bubble map to organize your discovery. • Create a Microsoft PowerPoint of your discoveries (pictures and facts). • You will present your PowerPoint on your creature to your classmates. • Paint a likeness of your creature on the class Wetlands Mural.

  6. Sequence of Activities • Week 1: Coyote Hills Fieldtrip, look at list of wetlands creatures and choose one. • Week 2: Write out questions you have about your creature. (**Be sure to find the creature’s common and scientific name, diet, habits, enemies, young, and physical characteristics). Find some pictures, fun facts and information about your creature (online, books, magazines, park ranger interviews, etc.) • Week 3: Create a bubble map to organize your discovery. • Week 3-4: Create PowerPoint on the computer (minimum of 6 slides) • End of Week 4: Present Wetlands Creature PowerPoints (2-3 minutes) • Week 5: Paint your creature on the class mural

Grading • Rubric will be provided • You will be graded on the following: • Good Learner & Observer behavior & participation during fieldtrip 10pts • Class participation in brainstorming and discussion 10pts • Completed and thorough Bubble Map 10pts • PowerPoint is clear and organized; includes pictures and facts** 40pts • Correct spelling and grammar 5pts • PowerPoint presentation is clear and engaging 5pts • Portrayed creature on class mural 15pts • Work ethic…Used time effectively 5pts
