Outline • Wetlands Habitat • Outline of species • Abiotic factors of the habitat • Sample food chain • Impact of the ecosystem by removing one organism • Method to protect the ecosystem • Wildlife Management Technique
Outline of Species Animals Plants Jewelweed Silver Birch Cattail Fern duckweed • Ducks • Muskrats • Heron • Dragonfly • Stickleback (3 & 9 spine) • Silverside • Larvae • Raccoon
Abiotic Factors of the Habitat • Environmentally protected area • Boardwalk for pedestrian use – with railings • Limited access to areas other than boardwalk
Impacts • Removal of the fish would increase the amount of larvae (often pest insects) • Removal of the fish would change the diet of the heron
Protection • Ensure that people remain on the boardwalk trails • Create clean up days in the town to remove litter and pollution (where possible) from the protected area
Wildlife Refugees • Conservation groups such as Ducks Unlimited promote conservation refugees, areas where water fowl and other animals can breed and reproduce to help population numbers • This is often a piece of land that is classified as productive habitat
Indicator Species • This is one way to “umbrella” protection for an ecosystem • Certain species are more sensitive to changes in the habitats. By accommodating them, we can accommodate the needs of all the other species
