  1. A Study of Galatians & Philippians Chapter 5

  2. Chapter 4

  3. Chapter 5 • Stand firm! • If you accept circumcision, you are disconnected from Christ • FALLEN AWAY FROM GRACE! • “You were doing so well, what happened?” • A little leaven is all it takes • “I have confidence you will take my view”

  4. Chapter 5 • “But if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted?” • Paul had Timothy circumcised (Acts 16:1-3) • If Paul had been preaching the necessity of circumcision why were these Judaizers following him and persecuting him? • His circumstances were a proof that he was NOT preaching the same gospel as the Judaizers.

  5. Chapter 5 • The offense of the cross • The cross was shameful to Jews • A crucified messiah was a revolting thought to them • But this point wasn’t the stumbling block • They could accept a crucified Savior • But not One who released all men from the bondage of the Law of Moses • Had Paul preached circumcision, they wouldn’t have stumbled at his preaching

  6. Chapter 5 • “I wish they would emasculate themselves!” • To make a eunuch of, to castrate • Self-mutilation was a violation of the Law (Deut. 23:1) • Castration was a part of the page worship of the Cybele cult in Galatia • Phil. 3:2 • If they would to this, they would be rejected by Christians and Jews • Righteous indignation? Matt. 23

  7. Chapter 5 • Obligation of Liberty (5:13-15) • Don’t use your freedom as an occasion for indulging in the flesh • Freedom does not allow us to become enslaved to sin (John 8:34; 2 Peter 2:18-19) • It places us under obligation to love (serve) our fellowman • Legalism is not the means our man’s justification • The perfect law of liberty (James 1:25) • The Law of Christ (Gal. 6:2; 1 Cor. 9:21) • The heart of the Law: Love your neighbor as yourself • They were tearing themselves to pieces
