  1. Minority Group A minority group is a subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their own lives than do members of a dominant or majority group. . . Minority means the same as subordinate, and dominant is used interchangeably with majority.

Minority Group A minority or subordinate group has five characteristics: Members experience unequal treatment Members share physical or cultural characteristics Membership is not voluntary – people are born into it Members have a strong sense of group solidarity Members generally marry others from the same group (Wagley and Harris, 1958)

  3. Minority Group There are four types of minority or subordinate groups: Racial groups Ethnic groups Religious groups Gender groups Other: age, disability, physical appearance, sexual orientation

  4. Minority Group There are three types of situations that might lead to the creation of subordinate groups: Migration Annexation Colonialism

  5. Minority Group There are typically six types of consequences that accompany subordinate group status: Extermination Expulsion Secession Segregation Fusion/Amalgamation 6. Assimilation
