  5. General History • September 16, 1890 – the first classes were held at Texas Normal Collage and Teachers Training institute • November 1893 , Chilton Was overworked. On February 1896Hedied in Indiana. He thought his education venture was a failure, with no way of visualizing that he had begun would over a 100 years later, would be one of Texas major institutions of higher learning

  6. General History • August 24, 1907 – the old normal building was struck by lightening and was destroyed by the fire. • By January 2001 - the Texas higher education began recognizing UNT system

  15. Founding Years • On September 23, 1912, the anniversary of Mr. Rice’s murder, Rice opened with 77 students and 12 faculty. • International festival celebrated the opening.

  16. School colors and Mascot • Blue and Grey. • Mascot: Owl.

  17. History • May 18, 1891: William Marsh Rice chartered the William Marsh Rice Institute. He states that more work must be done on the charter school only AFTER he dies. • September 23, 1900: Rice is murdered by valet, Charlie Jones, and lawyer, Albert Patrick • The first Rice president wanted a pretentious university and on Rice’s anniversary, the new university opened.

  26. Founding years • Founded in 1831 by Albert Gallatin, New York University is one of the largest private universities in the United States.

  28. History. • Albert Gallatin, secretary of the treasury under Pres. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison declared to establish, “….A system of rational and practical education fitting for all and graciously opened to all.”
