  1. ASSET DATA WAREHOUSEGAMS Invasive Species SHA GIS Day 2014 November 20, 2014

  2. Introductions Joseph Benedetta Maryland State Highway Administration Office of Planning & Preliminary Engineering DSED 410.545.5633 jbenedetta@sha.state.md.us Laurie Goudy Maryland State Highway Administration Office of Planning & Preliminary Engineering DSED 410.545.5681 lgoudy@sha.state.md.us Brad Spittel KCI Technologies, Inc. 3. Overview of Asset Management Program • Overall objective of asset management: • Meet desired performance standards in the most cost-effective way today and into the future • To effectively manage our transportation assets, we need: • Good information on what infrastructure assets we own and / or maintain • Good information on what condition these infrastructure assets are in • Data on how they are performing

  4. Asset Data Warehouse Application • Goals of ADW project: • Easy-to-use toolset for maintenance of asset information: • Lighting • Traffic Barriers • Signs • Rumble Strips • Line Striping • GAMS - Invasive Species • Park & Ride Lots • GAMS Field Tool (coming soon) • Raised Pavement Markings (coming soon) • Signals (coming soon) • Integrated map for editing and display of assets • Centralized GIS database, integrated within a secure application framework (eGIS), comprehensive reporting capabilities

  5. Timeline of Assets ADW Lighting (April 2011) ADW Traffic Barriers (September 2011) ADW Rumble Assets (March 2012) ADW Line Striping (August 2012) ADW Signs (September 2012) ADW Rumble Assets Enhancements (March 2014) ADW GAMS Invasive Species (July 2014) ADW Park & Ride (October 2014) ADW Signals (2015) ADW Line Striping Enhancements (December 2014) ADW GAMS Field Tool (April 2015) ADW Raised Markings (2015) ADW Lighting Enhancements (2015)

  6. GAMS Invasive Species - Overview • Statewide effort (10.4 million) to reduce/eliminate several invasive species that have overtaken edges of state owned ROW. • As part of Maryland’s Noxious Weed Control Law and SHA’s business plan • Manage 650 miles of roadway by 2015. Areas with invasive vegetation will be replanted • Pre-emptive maintenance rather then the more costly reactive maintenance – safety, environmental stewardship, sustainability, native vegetation, invasive species control • ADW Asset Editor provides: • Data repository • Maintenance activities • Survey information • Reports

  7. GAMS - Assets • Invasive Species • Landscape Beds (future) • Forest Stands (future) • Wetland Delineations (future) • Wetlands/Stream Restoration (future)

  8. GAMS Current Business Process

  9. Asset Data Warehouse - Security • Secure environment for maintaining asset data • Only users with editor privileges have the ability to add, update, or delete data • System recognizes users based on Windows’ sign-on

  10. Interface Overview - Selection • Two Selection Methods: • Select by Form • Select by Map

  11. Interface Overview - Selection by Map • Draw polygon on the map to select

  12. Interface Overview - Results • Results Tab: • Presents assets by route • Features • Attributes • Selection tab is accessible to change selection criteria

  13. Interface Overview - Results • Attribute Information Manager: • For the record selected in the Feature Manager, information can be updated / modified and then saved • Attributes are displayed based upon the selected tab: • Installation tab • Signs (panels) tab

  14. Primary Editing Functionality • Editing tools available in asset editor: • Add - adds feature with attributes • Move - adjust the position of an existing asset feature to a new location on the map • Delete - remove a feature from the database • Edit Shape

  15. Demonstration Walkthrough: eGIS ADW GAMS Asset Editor

  16. Mobile Field Tool – High Level Workflow • Collect GAMS survey information in the field and sync directly into the ADW Data Repository

  17. GAMS Mobile Field Tool ADW Data Repository

  18. Benefits • Easy-to-use, eGIS-based environment for data maintenance • Centralized management and storage • Integrated reporting • Future enhancements: • Field data collection tools • Linking asset information to third-party maintenance work order systems • Cost analysis and life expectancy • Additional assets • Maintenance and enhancements to existing assets

  19. Development & Deployment Process • Requirements • Design • Wireframes mockups • Database structure • Data migration plan • Development & Testing • Deployment • Production release • Documentation • Training
