  2. Topics Covered • key definitions • means of invasion • characteristics and examples of invasive species • What can be done?

  3. Native and Non-Native Species Native Species an organism that naturally originated and evolved in a particular region Non-Native Species an organism that has been deliberately, or accidentally, transported to its new location

  4. Native Species Indigenous Species an organism that arrived at one place from somewhere else on its own, without man’s aid Endemic Species an organism that evolved in one place and is found only there, and nowhere else on Earth

  5. Non-Native Species Introduced Species a species not indigenous to a given place, and that has been accidentally, or deliberately, transported by humans Invasive Species a species that enters into new ecosystems and spreads, causing damage to native species and their habitats

  6. How do species get here? • Natural Process • migratory animals • wind • water

  7. Primary Means of Invasion Human Activities • ship fouling/ballast water • fish farming • aquarium/pet trade • control other species • accident

  8. Characteristics of Invasive Species disperse quickly produce many offspring survive extreme environmental conditions “feed” on many species

  9. More Invasive Species barn owl feral pigs Miconia rosy wolf snail white-spotted jellyfish strawberry guava fountain grass

  10. What can be done? prevention containment control education eradication
