Persistent Poverty in Athens Athens poverty rate was 28.7% in 2008 Removing 18-24 age population only drops the rate to 23.16%. 1 in 3 (30.9% ) Athens children lives in poverty 75% of the families below poverty level have one or more family members working. 19,843 (19%) people in ACC are uninsured Athens is a “housing stressed community” 21% of Athens residents have difficulty with literacy 8. ACC’s poverty rate is the highest in the Nation

Finding Resources A community foundation is a tax-exempt, nonprofit, autonomous, publicly supported, nonsectarian philanthropic institution with a long-term goal of building permanent, named component funds established by many separate donors to carry out their charitable interests and for the broad-based charitable interest of and for the benefit of residents of a defined geographic area. - Community Foundations National Standards Board

Athens Area Community Foundation Athens Area Community Foundation helps passionate donors create permanent legacies by: • encouraging private giving for the public good; • providing a flexible and cost effective vehicle for donors with varied charitable interests and abilities to give; • helping build the capacity of service delivery providers in the greater Athens area; and • serving as a catalyst, convener and partner in shaping effective responses to problems and opportunities in Athens-Clarke, Oconee, Jackson, Barrow, Madison, and Oglethorpe counties.
