  1. TITAN SUPERCOMPUTER BY MANISHA JOSHI

  2. Introduction of Supercomputers Extremely fast data processing-oriented computers. Speed is measured in “FLOPS”. For highly calculation-intensive tasks. For “high performance computing”. Aims at capability computing rather than capacity computing.

  3. Evolution of supercomputers *Supercomputers were introduced in the 1960s . *The supercomputers of the 1970s (Cray-1) Used only a few processors. Speed was 80MFlops. *In1980s (Cray-2) was an 8 processor supercomputer. Speed was 1.9MFlops. *In the 1990s, machines with thousands of processors began to appear. *By the end of the 20th century supercomputers with ten thousands processors.

  4. About Titan Built by Cray Inc. at Oak Ridge laboratory. Titan is an upgrade version of “Jaguar”. Titan also has more than 700 terabytes of memory. Titan is measured at 17.59 PFLOPS. Taken the no.1slot in top10 list of supercomputers. 20,000 trillion calculations each second – or 20PFLOPS.

  6. More about Titan The combination of AMD’s Opteron CPUs in conjunction with Nvidia Tesla GPUs. Titan is ten times more powerful than a CPU-only system. It uses microchips more usually used for video gaming. 4.It has 18,688 nodes each has- 16-core AMD Opteron 6274 CPU with 32 GB. Nvidia Tesla K20X GPU with 6 GB .

  7. K20X GPU(Graphic Processing Unit)

  8. GPU Discription 1.Specifically designed to process the 3D graphics. 2. They are best suited for "parallellisable jobs“. 3. Higher throughput. 4. Accelerate scientific and technical computing. 5. GPUs are used in embedded systems, mobile phones, personal computers, and video games. 6. Producing real-world phenomena like explosions, smoke and fire.

  9. OVERVIEW OF TITAN System Name : Titan. Built by : Cray inc. Laboratory : Oak Ridge System family : Cray XT7. Operating system : LINUX. Processor : AMD’s Opteron CPU & Nvidia Tesla GPU. Released : January 2013.

  10. Advantages of Titan 1.High speed-17.59pflops. 2.Greater Performance. 3.Transfer speed of 1 TB/s . 4. Theoretically peak performance is 20 petaFLOPS. 5. Titan draws 8.2 MW ten times as fast in terms of floating point calculations.
