Introduction to Accreditation • American Public Works Association has had an accreditation program since 1996. • Of the thousands of Public Works Agencies in North America (including Canada) only 85Agencies have successfully been accredited by APWA. • Currently, there are 26 more Public Works agencies working towards accreditation.
Purpose of Accreditation • The purpose of Accreditation is to promote and recognize excellence in the operation and management of a Public works Agency
Accreditation Process 1. Complete Self-Assessment •Identify the number of practices we must provide 2. Obtain Council authorization/approval. 3. Apply for accreditation (3 yrs to complete) 4. Documentation of All Practices 5. On site Visit/ Evaluation by APWA Evaluators 6. Receive Accreditation 7. Re-apply every 3 years for Re-Accreditation
Self-assessment • Completed September 26,2013 • 593 practices reviewed • 310 practices are applicable for Columbus - 230 fairly complete 74% - 53 substantially complete 17% - 24 partially complete 7% - not started 1%
Key Elements- Accreditation • Committed leadership all the way to the top: -Director, City Manager, Council including Mayor • High degree of employee involvement -Balance on-going work/responsibilities
