MS: Types of Items • All Common Exams in Elementary and Middle Grade Science will contain four response-option multiple-choice (MC) items and constructed response (CR) items. • The constructed response items allow students to demonstrate their understanding in one of two ways, depending upon the course. • First, students may be asked to solve real-world problems using skills learned during the course. • Secondly, students may be asked to show their knowledge of science concepts through written expression.

Testing Structure and Time • • All Common Exams will be presented in two parts. • • It is a local decision to determine if the Common Exams will be given in one or two class periods. • • The Common Exams in 4th Grade Science will contain a total of 34 MC items and 3 CR items. The 6th and 7th Grade Common Exam will contain 34 MC items and 4 CR items. • Part One will contain 20 to 24 MC items. Part Two will contain 10 to 14 MC items and the CR items. Students should monitor the clock to ensure they allow themselves adequate time to respond to the questions.

Students should monitor the clock to ensure they allow themselves adequate time to respond to the questions. • • The Common Exam in Applied Science for OCS students will consist of thirty-six to forty MC items. • Each part will contain eighteen to twenty-one MC items. • Students should monitor the clock to ensure they allow themselves adequate time to respond to the questions.
