  2. Schizophrenia: a psychotic disorder (or a group of disorders) marked by severely impaired thinking, emotions, and behaviors. Synonyms: emotional disorder, mental sickness, psychosis, personality disorder

  4. Diagnostic Criteria A. Characteristic symptoms: • Delusions • Hallucinations • Disorganized speech • Grossly disorganized behavior B.Social/occupational dysfunction C. Duration

  5. Symptoms Positive: extra feelings that usually are not present Examples: Delusions &Hallucinations Negative: lack of behaviors or feelings that usually are present Examples: loss of interest in everyday activities, lack of emotion, & less ability to experience pleasure

  6. Biological Causes • Brain Dysfunction • chemical imbalance • Amphetamines and other similar substances can produce schizophrenic like symptoms • Dopamine over-activity

  7. Family and Schizophrenia • Genetic Factors • Tends to run in families • 1 in 10 percent of people with a first degree relative

  8. Twins • 28% chance of one identical twin developing disease if other has it • Larger ventricles with schizophrenia

  9. Behavioral Causes • Social Causation • Social Selection • Family stress • Environmental stress

  10. Paranoid Definition: people with this type are preoccupied with false beliefs about being persecuted or being punished by someone Symptoms: Suspicion of others, Episodic or continual Delusions and hallucinations, Auditory hallucinations, & Belief that they can fly

  11. Disorganized Definition: people with this type are often confused and incoherent and have jumbled their speech, their outward behavior may be emotionless, flat or inappropriate. Symptoms: moving slowly, unable to make decisions, forgetting or losing things, talking nonsense, and repeating movements or gestures

  12. Catatonic Definition: generally immobile and unresponsive to the world around them Symptoms: physical immobility, excessive mobility, extreme negativism, peculiar movements, and mimicking speech or movement

  13. Undifferentiated When a persons symptoms do not clearly represent any of the other subtypes The symptoms are many and varied

  14. Residual Residual schizophrenia occurs in chronic sufferers after the disappearance of positive symptoms. It usually lasts for one year and is characterized by negative symptoms Symptoms: little interest in life and not engage in eye contact or conversation

  15. Medications • Anti-anxiety • Anti-psychotic • Antidepressants • Sedatives

  16. Group/Family Therapy • Family therapy • Individual therapy • Cognitive therapy • Outreach and Community support services

  17. Biological Treatment • Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

  18. Behavioral Therapy • Stress Management Training • Assertiveness Training • Communication Skills Training • Problem Solving Skills
